BRIEF HISTORY:
To understand Dr. Cross's story, how such a brilliant well-renowned neurosurgeon could go from a wealthy asset to the Alliance war effort to living on the fringe of the known Verse crawling inside a bottle every chance he got, you have to understand Subject #42.

He met her only after the last psychiatric session was recorded, after any chance of truly knowing her was buried under layers of conditioning. He had been working for the Alliance since the war on compartmentalized, heavily guarded experimental medical research for some time, with only a disturbing hunch as to the true nature of his work nagging at the back of his mind. They simply paid him enough to try to lie to himself. But #42 started cutting up her mattress, they decided they needed more than a psychiatrist to stabilize her behavior, and put Cross on her case specifically. Even then he could lie to himself. She was just a case file and a project. An unfortunate consequence of a failed experiment, that the Alliances was trying to help by sending in Cross. Sure.

When she actually attacked her shrink though, Cross decided a psych profile and physical scans were insufficient. Nothing up to that point suggested she could turn violent without a trigger. It wasn't until later that it occurred to him that there was a trigger, and that her therapist wasn't suppose to live long enough to crawl out of that room and be seen by more than a cleanup crew. In any case, by this time, that nagging feeling in the back of his mind had grown teeth, and he was curious about the truth for more than just scientific reasons. So little by little, he gathered up the other pieces of the puzzle. When he finally met her, all at once he felt like he had sold his soul.

There was a rebel faction consisting mostly of former project members and brown-coats that had been a thorn in the Alliance's paw for years. Bounty ads weren't hard to come by, and since some of them were former colleagues, it wasn't hard to catch rumors about what the ads didn't say. This faction was his way to make amends. Her brother probably thought it was just luck that they found him.

Soon after, Cross decided the Alliance wouldn't quietly accept his resignation. As far as they knew, he hadn't actually done anything illegal, so to say he's 'on the run' would be an overstatement. But the rebels convinced him they'd probably see him as a liability. So after spending a couple years trying to undo his life's work, he finds himself now on the fringe planets just trying to make a living, and drink away those parts of him he can't live with.
